Turning 46: The Beautiful Recalibration and the Gift of Good Girlfriends

When I was younger, I thought birthdays were milestones.
Now that I'm turning 46, I realize they're invitations.
An invitation to pause. To take inventory. To celebrate how far I've come. To ask different questions than I did ten or even five years ago.
Forty-six doesn't feel like getting older.
It feels like recalibrating.
Somewhere between surviving life's storms and finally finding peace, something shifts. You stop chasing everything that once seemed so important. You become less interested in proving yourself and more interested in protecting your peace.
You begin asking different questions.
Who brings me joy?
Who inspires me?
Who challenges me to become a better version of myself?
Who celebrates my wins without secretly competing with me?
At this stage of life, friendships become less about convenience and more about alignment.
There is something sacred about friendships that have been tested by time.
The women who have walked beside me have witnessed every version of me. Together, we've experienced the full spectrum of life. We've celebrated promotions, marriages, new beginnings, and dreams fulfilled. We've grieved losses that changed us forever. We've lost children. We've been surprised and delighted by new life entering our families. We've stood beside one another through heartbreak, healing, and the kind of joy that brings tears to your eyes.
We've learned that life doesn't move in a straight line.
Some seasons ask us to mourn.
Others invite us to celebrate.
The blessing is having women who know how to do both with you.
Over the years, we've celebrated birthdays in different cities, taken spontaneous trips, and somehow, no matter where life has carried us, we've always found our way back to the ocean.
Maybe that's because the ocean has always felt like home.
It reminds us that life moves in seasons. That every wave eventually reaches the shore. That no matter how turbulent the waters become, peace is still possible.
Those trips have never just been vacations.
They've been places of healing.
Places where we've laughed until we cried, stayed up talking far too late, dreamed about what was next, and reminded one another that we were capable of so much more than we could see in difficult seasons.
That's what good girlfriends do.
They don't simply tell you what you want to hear.
They lovingly tell you the truth.
They remind you who you are when you've forgotten.
They pray for you when you don't have the words.
They celebrate your promotions, your new business, your healed heart, your peaceful home, and even your smallest victories as if they were their own.
Most importantly, they keep pushing you forward.
Not because who you are isn't enough.
But because they can see who you're becoming.
By our forties, many of us have lived enough life to know that nothing is guaranteed.
We've buried parents.
We've experienced heartbreaking goodbyes.
We've celebrated miraculous new beginnings.
We've survived layoffs, career pivots, disappointments, reinventions, and prayers that took years to answer.
Those experiences don't just change us.
They refine us.
They teach us that time is precious and energy is even more valuable.
That's why I've become intentional about the women I allow close to me.
I want women who talk about possibilities instead of problems.
Women who share resources instead of gatekeeping.
Women who celebrate healing more than hustle.
Women who send opportunities just because they thought of me.
Women who remind me to laugh.
Women who encourage me to write the book, launch the business, take the trip, plant the garden, trust God, and keep going.
Because we are not too old.
We are finally seasoned enough to know what matters.
Turning 46 isn't about trying to relive my twenties.
It's about embracing the woman I've worked so hard to become.
The woman who has boundaries.
The woman who protects her peace.
The woman who understands that rest is productive.
The woman who no longer apologizes for wanting a beautiful life.
And perhaps one of the greatest gifts of this season is realizing that success isn't measured only by what we've built.
It's also measured by who is still walking beside us.
If you're blessed enough to have even one woman who genuinely cheers for you, checks on you, tells you the truth with love, and celebrates your growth without comparison, treasure her.
Water that friendship.
Protect it.
Show up for her the way she shows up for you.
Because the right girlfriends don't compete with your light.
They help you shine brighter.
Here's to turning 46.
Here's to recalibration.
Here's to choosing peace over performance.
Here's to friendships that have weathered every season of life and somehow still find their way back to the ocean.
And here's to believing that our best chapters aren't behind us.
They're waiting for us just beyond the next wave.
